Manually uninstall ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro

Issue

  • You receive the error message "Uninstallation completed with error" or "Uninstall Failed" when uninstalling ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro
  • You receive the error message "Uninstall Failed" when upgrading from ESET Cybersecurity (4.x) to a later version of ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro

Solution

Begin with part I

Only proceed to part II if your issue is not resolved.

I. Manually remove ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro

  1. Close any ESET windows that are open, including the ESET Cyber Security Setup window.
     
  2. Click the Apple icon System Preferences  Users & Groups.

  1. Select the administrative user account. (If there is more than one administrative account, repeat the following steps for each one.) Click Login Items, select an ESET product entry and then click the minus icon to delete it from the list. If there is no entry for ESET, continue to step 4.

  1. Click Finder  → Applications and then double-click Utilities → Activity Monitor

  1. Select an entry for ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro, click Quit Process and then click Force Quit when prompted.

Repeat for each entry of ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro. If there is no entry for ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro, continue to step 5.

  1. Click Finder  Applications. Right-click the entry for ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro, and click Show Package Contents.

  1. Expand Contents → Helpers and then double-click Uninstaller. If the uninstaller ends in error or does not exist, drag the entry for ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro to the Trash and enter your administrator password when prompted. If there is no entry for ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro, continue to solution II below.

  1.  Click Uninstall in the ESET Cyber Security Pro Setup window. Click Close in the Uninstallation completed successfully window.

  1. Click Finder   Applications and double-click Utilities  Terminal.

  1. Type the following command in the Terminal window and press Enter.
sudo rm –Rf "/Library/Application Support/ESET"

Type your password in the command line and press Enter.

Enter your password carefully

The cursor in the command line and the password you are typing will not be visible. Be sure to type your password correctly and only one time before pressing the Enter key.

Type the following command in the Terminal window and press Enter.

rm –Rf ~/.esets

  1. Restart your computer. Your ESET product should be completely removed from your computer.

About upgrading

If you are upgrading from ESET Cybersecurity (4.x) to a later version of ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro, follow the instructions from the appropriate Knowledgebase article below to install your new ESET product:

 


 

II. Uninstall using the ESET Cyber Security .dmg

  1. Insert the ESET Cyber Security CD into your computer and double-click the ESET icon on your Desktop. If you downloaded ESET from the internet, click the install package in your Downloads folder (or the default folder set by your browser).
    • If you do not have the retail disk or install package you can download the install package from the Home Downloads page.

  1. Double-click the Uninstall icon and follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall ESET Cyber Security.

If you receive "Identity of the installer cannot be confirmed"

If installation of ESET products is being blocked, hold CTRL + click (or right-click if you have a two-button mouse) the installer file, select Open from the context menu and then click Open when you are prompted by Apple gatekeeper. For more information about how to configure Apple gatekeeper, visit the Apple support article on this topic.

  1. Click Close to exit the uninstaller.
     
  2. Restart your computer.

About upgrading

If you are upgrading from ESET Cybersecurity (4.x) to a later version of ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro, follow the instructions from the appropriate Knowledgebase article below to install your new ESET product:
